七爷 | Qi Ye - priest
This is the darkest canon I'm requesting, so just to avoid worries about my DNWs, I'm fine with doing what the book does and having all kinds of horrible things acknowledged as long the work itself doesn't go into detail about them.
Jing Beiyuan/Wu Xi (Qi Ye)
I love how ridiculously intense these two are about each other, to the point that they pretty much break fate, and yet each of them has his own "I'm not worthy" moments. Somehow they get to have both intense drama full of epic grand gestures, and a quiet slow burn where they show how much they care in small, every-day ways. They love each other so much but they're very messed up people in different ways, and that makes their eventual happy ending hit even harder.
Jing Beiyuan & Lu Ta (Qi Ye)
Jing Beiyuan & Lu Ta & Wu Xi (Qi Ye)
Their weird little family fills me with joy. I love the way Jing Beiyuan and Lu Ta's personalities play off each other; that line about how it was hard to tell who was the dad and who was the child lives in my mind rent free. We don't see much of how Wu Xi fits into that dynamic in canon aside from Lu Ta's confusion about him and his dad, but that's what makes it interesting!
天官赐福 - 墨香铜臭 | Tian Guan Ci Fu - Moxiang Tongxiu
Fēng Xìn/Mù Qíng (TGCF)
These two hit me right in the "constant bickering turned into UST" trope, but there is also a serious undercurrent behind the humor that helps make them rounded characters. They've spent centuries stuck in the same dynamic, without either becoming friends again or avoiding each other. Their original falling out (with each other and with Xie Lian) was complex and very human: they both had good points, they both screwed up, and given their circumstances it makes sense why they couldn't see eye-to-eye. They're very funny, but they also have emotional depth.
Nimona (2023)
Ambrosius Goldenloin & Nimona (Nimona 2023)
Ballister Blackheart | Ballister Boldheart & Nimona (Nimona 2023)
Ballister Blackheart | Ballister Boldheart/Ambrosius Goldenloin & Nimona (Nimona 2023)
I'd be very happy with any combination of these characters! Nimona and Ballister's dynamic is lovely, and it'd be nice to see either missing scenes during the movie or where that goes post-canon. With Nimona and Ambrosius, it's really interesting to see what might happen - they were at odds during canon so where do they go from here?
Crossover Fandom
Elrond (LotR) & Lan Qiren (The Untamed)
This is something I never would have thought about on my own but seeing it blew my mind, in a good way. Just the two of them sitting around and talking would make me happy. There's a wide range of ways a meeting between them could go - they can bond over many things from 'a lifetime of war and tragedy' to 'music and poetry'.
Ling Wen (TGCF) & Jin Guangyao (MDZS)
The most overworked and stressed character in TGCF and the most overworked and stressed character in MDZS! Plus they're both, to put it mildly, kind of shady. Maybe Ling Wen is impressed with Jin Guangyao's work ethic and talent for putting up with idiots and decides to help him. Maybe he's the one who asks for help by praying to her (and relates to her backstory of being unappreciated). Maybe Jin Guangyao eventually becomes a civil god himself. So many fun possibilities here.
He Xuan (Tiān Guān Cì Fú) & Nie Huaisang (MDZS)
Nie Huaisang (MDZS) & Shi Qingxuan (TGCF)
Nie Huaisang (MDZS) & Shi Wudu (TGCF)
This arc of TGCF has all the ingredients to make Nie Huaisang interacting with any of these characters fascinating: dead and decapitated older brothers! convoluted long-term revenge plans! doing terrible things for your brother that he didn't ask for or even knows of! Nie Huaisang would have reasons to bond with and/or be slightly horrified by any of them.
Star Trek: Discovery
Keyla Detmer/Joann Owosekun (Disco)
Season 3 made me ship them so, so hard. They clearly understand and respect each other so much, and they're so supportive! And their joy at seeing each other still alive in the season finale was amazing. I loved seeing more of Keyla's hotshot pilot side, and of Joann's kindness that extends even to those cute little robots. And then season 4 gave us even more shippy moments and backstory tidbits.
琅琊榜 | Nirvana in Fire
Fei Liu & Lin Chen & Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe (NiF)
Lin Chen & Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe (NiF)
Fei Liu & Lin Chen (Nirvana in Fire)
Fei Liu & Lin Shu | Mei Changsu | Su Zhe
This is another group of characters that I'd enjoy in any combination. I love everything about Mei Changsu: his cleverness and his layers of secret identities, of course, but also his righteous anger, and his sense of humor, and his stubborness, and his lying, and honestly I could be here all day. I love his weird sibling-like relationship with Fei Liu and how much he spoils him. I love how Lin Chen is pretty much the only person who tells him when he's being an idiot, and that one line about how doesn't care about Lin Shu because his friend is Mei Changsu broke my heart. I love Lin Chen and Fei Liu's own weird dynamic where they annoy each other a lot but they clearly still care.
陈情令 | The Untamed (TV)
Niè Huáisāng & Niè Míngjué (CQL)
I love Nie Huaisang's secrets, his ruthlessness, and his contrasts. The drama shows us a lot of his friendly, carefree side in his youth, and it's really interesting (and heartbreaking) to see him end up as a lonely manipulator, and how he really was a rage-filled, stubborn Nie after all. The contrasts are a big part of what I like about his relationship with Nie Mingjue, too: they're very different, at least superficially, but they love each other deeply in spite of their arguments and would do anything for each other.
(I've watched and liked Fatal Journey; I don't *expect* fic that uses it as a canon source, since it's just a tie-in, but feel free to use it if you want!)
Nie Huaisang & Pet Bird(s) (CQL)
I saw this in the tagset and thought it was genius. There's so many ways this dynamic could go - birds as spoiled pets, birds as confidants during Nie Huaisang's loneliest times, birds as spies...
Dragon Age (Video Games)
The Iron Bull/Dorian Pavus
This is such a fun ship, with two characters who love each other a lot and have plenty of funny banter and hot sex and who are badasses together - and underneath that, you have them navigating their conflicting backgrounds, and each of them has their own sad backstory. They really end up being good for each other, and I love that.
